Project type
Narrative Painting
Date
2025
The 7 numbered panel triptych of The Crucifixion. Each ‘Hour’, or panel denotes a major theme or event in the cannon of holy scripture.
The First Hour of Christ’s crucifixion; Trial. Jesus stands in accusation before the Pharisees and the Roman authorities. The verdict is given for His torment and execution.
The Second Hour of Christ’s crucifixion; Scourging. A panel showing the gold-leaf defined divine essence of Christ marked by red ochre blood stains. The scourging of the body is a brutal and deep lashing implemented by Roman command.
The Third Hour of Christ’s crucifixion; Carrying the Cross. Jesus carries the sins of man on his shoulders as He did the crucifix. The black grime and tarnished globe that symbolizes the Earth is a burden our Lord carries to the hour of His death.
The Fourth Hour of Christ’s crucifixion; Crucifixion. The Christ is grimly sacrificed for the sake of all humanity. His divinity is emptied and encompasses the hour of atonement as His blood leeches down to infuse with the foundation of His kingdom.
The Fifth Hour of Christ’s crucifixion; Darkness. The death of our Lord brought a terrible darkness as all creation mourned for its maker’s passing. Nebulous uncertainty mingles with black ink to obscure the image, but through all this, the standing of the cross is clear enough to see.
The Sixth Hour of Christ’s crucifixion; Terror. The shaking of the earth and the raising of the dead stunned and frightened many people in the land. The tearing of the temple curtain sealed their fate, God’s promise of judgement was realized.
The Seventh Hour of Christ’s crucifixion; Wrath. The final panel exclaims the perfect wrath of God, expressed as brilliant golden rays of weight for the Lord’s perfect standard of judgement. The wrath of God is satisfied by His perfect sacrifice, Jesus.
